Colleagues mourn Berton Roy Moed, MD

27 October 2020

The AO community this week mourns the death of past AO Trauma International Board (AO TIB) member and past AO Trauma Research Commission (AO TRC) chairperson Berton Roy Moed, MD, of Saint Louis, United States. He died on October 22, 2020.

Roy was a member of the AO TRC from 2011 to 2017 and was chairperson from 2017 until the end of 2019. He was regarded as a true leader and a great visionary. Under his leadership, the AO Trauma Clinical Priority Program (CPP) Patient Outcome was successfully implemented.

At the time of his death, Roy was professor and chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

Michael R Baumgaertner, chairperson of the AO TIB and former president of AO North America (AO NA), recalled Roy’s passion for research, teaching, and mentoring.

“I met Roy in 1989, and, together with our wives, we spent time in 1997 in Bern, Switzerland visiting Professor Reinhold Ganz. We were able to recruit him to serve on the AO NA Research Committee in 2010, and he rapidly rose to his role as AO TRC chairperson. Roy was a brilliant researcher, and remarkably organized. In meetings, he was never afraid to say what needed to be said,” Baumgaertner said. “He was passionate about his teaching and mentoring. As much as I respected Roy’s intellect and perspective, I truly loved his laugh and dry sense of humor. Time with Roy was good time. The AO has lost a passionate researcher with a great academic background, a dedicated faculty educator, and a great friend. Our thoughts are with his family.”

Roy is survived by his wife, Jill; daughters, Lisa Gruson, MD (Konrad Gruson, MD) and Rebecca Moed Tantillo, esq (Chris Tantillo); grandchildren, Anna and Michael Gruson and Gabriel Tantillo: sister, Paulette Moed; brother, George Moed (Judi); sister-in-law, Paula Zaks Stein (Dan Stein); and brothers-in-law, John Steinberger (Terry) and Joe Steinberger (Rebecca).
