Call for Applications—Chairperson of the AO Trauma Middle East and Northern Africa Education Committee

Dear members of AO Trauma Middle East and Northern Africa (AO TMENA),

We are happy to announce the call for applications for the prestigious position of:

 

Chairperson of the AO Trauma Middle East and Northern Africa Education Committee (AO TMENAEC)

The Chairperson of the AO TMENAEC is also a full member of the AO Trauma Middle East and Northern Africa Board (AO TMENAB).

Terms of office

The first term of the current AO TMENAEC Chairperson, Saeed Al-Thani (UAE), will end on June 30, 2021 (re-election is possible). Based on the Terms of Reference of the AO TMENAEC, the term of the new AO TMENAEC Chairperson will be as follows:

  • July 1, 2021* – June 30, 2024: three (3) years term as Chairperson (one re-election possible)

* The change of office of the Chairperson always takes place after the meeting of the Assembly of Trustees. The administrative cut-off is end of June.

Eligibility for the Chairperson of the AO TMENAEC

In order to be considered for nomination by the Nomination Committee (NomCom), candidates must be a paying AO Trauma member of a country that belongs to AO TMENA and fulfill one of the following criteria:

  • Current and past members of any AO TMENA Committee or Current and past chairpersons of any AO TMENA Country Council*
  • Further criteria may apply as defined in the job descriptions
  • A same function can only be held once by the same person

* Current or past chairperson of any AO TMENA country council: After 2010 according to AO T database. Before 2010 formal documentation (minutes etc.) is required confirming officer role. If a current chairperson of a country council is elected as the new chairperson of the AO TMENA Education Committee, he/ she must resign from his/ her previous member function before starting his/ her new position. A current member of a country council is not eligible to become a chairperson of the AO TMENA Education Committee.
Current or past member of any AO TMENA committee or current or past chairperson of any AO TMENA country council, must have held the position for minimum one year before becoming eligible for election of AO TMENA Education Committee Chairperson.

In addition, the candidates must also fulfill the requirements specified in the referenced job description. A same function can only be held once by the same person.


Electorate and voting mechanism

Based on the Terms of Reference of the AO TMENAEC the following voting mechanism applies:
Electorate:

  • AO TMENA Country Council chairpersons
    (in case a country council chairperson runs for election, he/she is excluded from the entire voting process and the voting right is passed to the country council education officer)
  • Elected AO TMENA Trustees

Voting mechanism:

First-past-the-post by anonymous e-voting

  • Multiple run-off electronic voting process
  • If a candidate reaches an absolute majority in any round he/she is elected
  • The candidate with the least votes is eliminated at each round
  • Another round is carried out as long as no candidate reaches an absolute majority

At a parity of votes between remaining candidates, the AO TMENAB Chairperson has the casting vote

Number of votes:

  • Each AO TMENA country, represented by the AO TMENA Country Chapter chairpersons, gets the following number of votes (consultation with the country council and country chapter members is highly recommended):
    • The threshold to get a vote is 25 paying members
    • from 25–50 members: one (1) vote
    • from 51–100 members: two (2) votes
    • from 101–175 members: three (3) votes
    • >175 members: four (4) votes
  • Each elected AO TMENA Trustee gets one (1) vote
  • The number of members per country is being defined as the average of the end of the month totals of the last six (6) months before the voting starts.

The electorate will be informed by email. The votes will be cast anonymously on the AO Trauma website.

Nomination and electoral process

  • All interested and qualified candidates must submit by e-mail their CV and a letter of intent to the AO Trauma Regional Director Philipp Büscher (aotmena@aotrauma.org) by December 6, 2020, midnight, CET.  Download CV form
  • The NomCom will review all applications and approve the eligible candidates by December 17, 2020.
  • The election will run from January 11, 2021 to January 25, 2021.
  • The election process is carried out according to the first-past-the-post logic:
    • Multiple run-off electronic voting process through the AO Trauma event room
    • If a candidate reaches an absolute majority in any round he/she is elected
    • The candidate with the least votes is eliminated at each round
    • Another round is carried out as long as no candidate reaches an absolute majority
  • The elected candidate has to be confirmed by the AO TMENAB.
  • The NomCom will then ratify the electoral process, inform the candidates of the election outcome, and announce the result on the AO Trauma website.
