In many ways AOTrauma has always been the main pillar of the AO Foundation and vice versa. It is difficult to separate one from the other.

In 2008, the AO Foundation Board of Directors created AOTrauma as a dedicated clinical division to ensure a constant focus on relevant trauma-related clinical problems.

AOTrauma, through its global network and governance structure, continues to identify clinically relevant problems and aims to develop solutions for the patient by connecting translational research, clinical research, product and procedure development, quality assurance, and surgeon education.

Today, AOTrauma is a global community of best-in-class trauma and orthopedic surgeons, researchers, and operating room personnel. It continues to focus on its strengths: education, research, and community building.

AOTrauma has maintained its heritage and the history and established its own identity within the AO Foundation. The organization has matured through structural changes to better meet emerging challenges of trauma and orthopedic surgeons worldwide. These surgeons are organized in AOTrauma’s numerous dedicated country chapters in all regions around the world.

Today AOTrauma is not only focused on bone healing, but also important adjacent clinical topics, such as bone infection, patient outcome, or orthogeriatric trauma care. In addition, AOTrauma has established important strategic initiatives to develop innovative approaches to surgeon education and improve patient safety.
